Frequently Asked Questions

How long have you been doing this?

I have been making models and sculpting for over 20 years, but only in the last 5 years has CopyCat Creations become a business in the true sense of the word.

What is so special about polymer clay and Super Sculpey?

Polymer Clay is a petroleum based polymeric material. All Sculpey clays are certified non-toxic and approved to use the AP non-toxic seal by The Arts & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI), and are therefore safe around children and pets. As described on our Sculpture page, Super Sculpey is a superior material to work with compared to natural clay, due to its malleability, non-drying nature and ability to hold very fine detail without slump. Althouigh it is more expensive than natural clay, its benefits far outweigh the additional cost.

How are the pieces constructed?

All sculptures have a wire armature for extra strength, allowing more extreme poses than possible with just clay. This armature is ten covered with the clay, into which the detail of the figure is sculpted. The figure is then mounted on a hardwood or customised base, using the armature as a mechanism for anchoring the figure to the base. This results in a very strong and stable sculpture.

How long does it take to make a piece?

This is a very difficult question to answer, as every sculpture is individual. It really depends upon the complexity, and the number of other orders we have. On average most sculptures are delivered between 10 - 16 weeks from the initial order being placed.

Can I have a different base that the standard one?

You are more than welcome to request a custom base for your figure. Bear in mind though that a hardwood base of your choice is included in the cost of the sculpture, and that any customised bases will be at an additional cost.

What if I don't like the piece?

We will be in close communication during the design and construction of the piece. So you will have plenty of opportunity to get exactly what you want.

What if it breaks in shipping?

All packages are professionally packed, insured, and sent via a tracked delivery service. In the event that a piece is broken, insurance will cover the loss and your sculpture will be remade as a rush order, no extra charge to you, and you will receive a second piece. This is why it is important to place you order with plenty of time to spare, in order for us to complete and safely ship a sculpture to you.

What about the pictures I send you, will they be returned?

All photographs you supply will be returned unharmed with the sculpture. We realise that you may be providing us with orginal photographs that are hard to replace, so we take every care to protect them the minute we recieve them by placing them into clear document wallets for protection.

Why is shipping not included in the cost?

We do not include shipping costs in the cost of the sculpture, as most shipping is priced according to weight. Depending on the nature of the sculpture, the number of figures and size, the weight can vary considerably. Consequently we prefer to calculate the cost of shipping for each piece separately, so people with smaller scultpures are not paying over the odds for postage. We will provide a csot for shipping when we submit a quotation for a comission.

Also if you live within a 15 mile radius of Loughborough we will deliver free of charge!

Do I make my cheque payable to 'CopyCat Creations'?

No. Assuming you want us to proceed with a sculpture after providing a quotation, please make your cheque payable to 'Lee Barnett'.
